Not all SPF's are created equal

Hi, Sweet People!

So, some questions to me lately about SPF have prompted this post. It's true, not all SPF's are created equal. And most people don't know how to apply them properly so that they can have the correct effect. It seems simple - apply and go, right? But how long are you waiting to hit the sunny beach after your first application? Did you know that SPF usually has to be reapplied throughout the day, and that all SPF's do not protect you from UVB, UVA (and now) UVC rays? What the heck is the difference between UVA, UVB and UVC rays anyhow, right? :) Read this.

Your bottle should tell you how long to wait before hitting sun spots after applying. In the case that it doesn't, always give your chemical application at least 15-30 minutes to start working. Between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., UV rays are stronger, even on cloudy days. So, it's necessary to reapply sunscreen every couple of hours, especially if you're getting wet.

There's been debate in the past about what strengths are best. My education has led me to believe that you should wear a minimum of 30 SPF or higher, but much higher after that doesn't do that much more to protect us.

If you want to avoid chemical sunscreens altogether, because you're not in the sun that much anyhow (we still need our Vitamin D!) then you can use a physical block to help protect your skin as well. Any high quality mineral powder will create a physical barrier (much like wearing thin clothes) that will aid in skin protection.

Like a lot of people, I'm guilty of forgetting to put on sunscreen or not wanting extra stuff on my face. But I gotta tell ya chick peas, if you let your skin get hit too often, it toughens the skin. That's right, toughens the skin. Ever get those rough patches? Dark spots? Uneven texture? These are the consequences of sun damage. In addition, when you do have blemishes, it's harder to get the infection(s) out.

I now carry an advanced SPF in my new Jentri Quinn Makup + Skin line that you can purchase for $12 buckaroos. Whatever your preference is - stay protected, my friends!

Reversing something with your skin is so much more time consuming than just doing it right the first time. Now go be beautiful, and enjoy your SUMMER!
