Dry vs. Dehydrated Skin
Are you suffering from dry or dehydrated skin, by pretties? Do you know the difference?
Dry skin and dehydrated skin are not the same thing. It's important to notice the difference so that you can solve whatever problem you're having.
Dry skin is generally flakey and can have a chalky appearance. Dehydrated skin may appear wrinkly or rougher than normal, in appearance and/or texture.
One of the most common skin types we see is oily skin that's dehydrated. The oil that's produced is overcompensating for the lack of moisture. Generally a mistake people make with this issue is to use products that tend to dry the skin out, therefor increasing their initial problem. The skin will produce even more oil to compensate.
Dehydrated skin can be experienced even if you think you drink plenty of water. Did you know that for every cup of coffee you drink it takes four cups of water to make up for the lack of hydration? I'm not anti-coffee by any means, but good to know, right? :)
Stress can often be a factor in dehydrated skin, too. Have you ever noticed your skin after a long, stressful week and wondered by you look so sad and tired? Really, you feel youthful and alive inside!! So why don't those eyes match your inner child-like goddess?
To show you an example of what I'm talking about, check out these two photos. One is me experiencing dehydrated skin (before I knew what was going on) and one is me after an awesome hydrating facial!!! Can you tell the difference? I sure can!!
DEHYDRATED
HYDRATED (same time frame, after 'Eminence' facial)
Here are a few things you can do to get your skin balanced again, and hydrated!
1) Use a good toner (mist is great) in the AM and PM, and even to refresh mid-day with.
2) Use a good facial cleaner that doesn't dry out your skin. Pay attention to ingredients more than (deceiving) brand names. If you can't invest in any specialty products, try Cetaphil for a cleanser (our educator apprised us of this) and Tea Tree, Witch hazel, rose water (for dry skin), or lavender water (for oily skin) as a toner. Caution: tea tree and witch hazel can be irritating if over-used, so I recommend using them with caution at first.
Remember, just because you get a product recommendation (i.e. Neutrogena - which I used for years...) at a dermatologists' office it doesn't mean it's the best... have you seen "Love and Other Drugs"? Seriously! Those offices are dealing with diseases, so our appearances aren't (always) exactly an emergency to them. :)
3) Use an appropriate moisturizer, depending on your skin's needs. Aveda's 'All Sensitive' line is nice, if you're not sure where to start.
One of my favorite lines remains to be Eminence, but I realize it's not always practical for people, including myself, to buy. So I'm always on the hunt for simple, natural ingredients that can change our lives. Aveda's products are up there on my list of high quality, natural products... they also happen to be more affordable. yay! :)
If you're in the Austin area, come see me at the Aveda Institute Spa between now and March and I'll be happy to give you a consultation before we begin your treatment. Skin analyzations are done prior to treatment, too. If you tell me you read this blog, I will give you a 20% off discount coupon to use on your service with me. ;)
Happy Days!
